Karnal lathicharge: HC to hear plea on Sept 17

Chandigarh, September 3

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today fixed September 17 for hearing a writ petition, moved by a group of five Karnal farmers seeking a probe by a retired High Court judge into the police lathicharge on protesting farmers in the district on August 28.

The police had resorted to lathicharge on the farmers allegedly after being given specific instructions by Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ayush Sinha. The officer has already been transferred and posted as Additional Secretary in the Citizen Resources Information Department.

The petitions — Munish Lather, Ravinder, Mahender, Rohtash, and Ranbir Singh — claimed they and scores of other farmers were injured in the “brutal beating given by police officials on the instructions of District Magistrate and senior police officials being in a total violation of the law and violating the fundamental rights of the petitioners”.

The petitioners, through counsels Navkiran Singh, Hakam Singh and Ajit Pal Mander, also sought directions to the state government to provide adequate compensation to the petitioners and all injured farmers. — TNS
